The 40-year-old economics graduate made shooting history by becoming the first woman to win a mixed-sex shooting event when she won gold in the skeet shooting at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. The ISFF barred mixed-sex competition after Barcelona, leaving China’s Zhang unable to defend her Olympic title at Atlanta 1996. There have been separate men's and women's skeet events since. Zhang began shooting while at middle school and joined the Sichuan provincial shooting team in 1984 before making her international debut in 1989.
